In fact, it will mark the safeguarding of this unique collection by the French National Library and an exhibition that will showcase highlights of the collection; the result of many years of work that started as early as 1996.
En effet, il marquera la sauvegarde de cette collection multimédia unique par la Bibliothèque nationale Française, exprimé par une exposition qui mettra en valeur les temps forts de la collection; le résultat de nombreuses années de travail qui ont commencé dès 1996.
The Contribution of The Ovahimba Years project
The Ovahimba Years project, since its inception in 1996, has made a significant and unique contribution toward the preservation and conservation of the intangible cultural heritage of the Ovahimba and other Otjiherero language speaking communities. The lifestyle and culture of the Ovahimba are fast changing and it is hence very important for the preservation of world culture to create a living trace of their intangible cultural heritage.
La contribution du projet Les années Ovahimba à la culture mondiale
Depuis sa création en 1996, le projet Les années Ovahimba a contribué de manière unique à la préservation du patrimoine culturel des Ovahimba et des communautés de langue Otjiherero. Cette culture tend à disparaître, et c’est pourquoi il est très important de garder une trace vivante de leur patrimoine.
Since 1996, Rina Sherman has developed and managed all aspects of the project The Ovahimba Years: fund raising, administration & management, extensive multimedia fieldwork, training of assistants, building of a community centre now used as a school, and numerous other development projects, publishing films, books, articles, Web sites, etc. She has received sustained support from among others, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the French Ministry of Culture, The Ford Foundation, and The British High Commission in Namibia, Caltex – Namibia, Gamsberg Macmillan Publishers and many others. Today her work features in the collections of numerous major university and research libraries, museums and various institutions worldwide. The introduction of her archive in the collections of the French National Library is one further step toward ensuring the perennial conservation of the intangible cultural heritage of the Ovahimba.

Rina Sherman porte le projet Les années Ovahimba depuis 1996 : recherche de financement, administration et gestion, étude de terrain, formation des assistants, construction d'un centre communautaire actuellement utilisé comme une école, et de nombreux autres projets de développement, édition de films, livres, publication d’articles, sites Web, etc. Son projet a été soutenu par le Ministère des Affaires étrangères, le Ministère de la Culture, la Fondation Ford, la Haute Commission britannique en Namibie, Caltex – Namibie, les Éditions Gamsberg Macmillan et bien d'autres. Aujourd'hui, ses travaux figurent dans les collections de nombreuses grandes bibliothèques universitaires et de recherche, les musées et diverses institutions en France et dans le monde entier. Le don de ses archives à la Bibliothèque nationale Française est une étape importante pour assurer la pérennité du patrimoine culturel immatériel des Ovahimba.
